Biography

Donal is Professor of Financial Services in the School of Management and Economics at Queens University. He teaches on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Finance. His subject specialisms are Financial Theory and Derivative Markets and Instruments. Donal's research interests focus primarily in the areas of financial markets, financial institutions and financial instruments. Presently he is working on a selection of issues pertinent to futures markets these include the distributional properties of futures contracts; optimal hedge ratios for futures contracts; and the application of Value at
Risk models to (VaR) to futures contracts. Most of his research emphasis currently relates to credit unions. Donal is currently
involved in a number of research programmes. In conjunction with Wilson (St. Andrews) and Goddard (University of Swansea) he has recently completed work on the growth determinants of US credit unions while with Ferguson and Glass(University of Ulster) he has examined the radial and non-radial efficiency of UK credit unions. In collaboration with Ferguson and Hyndman (University of Ulster) and
Oyelere (Lincoln University, NewZealand) research programmes into the
accountability of Irish and UK credit unions are almost complete. Finally with McCarthy, Briscoe and Ward (University College Cork) an investigation into voluntarism and the role of women in Irish credit unions has recently commenced. To help progress the above research programme a number of research grants have been received over the last two years. The funding bodies are The Royal Irish Academy, The Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (England and Wales),
The Irish Accountancy Educational Trust, The Wincott Foundation, The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland and the European Commission under the auspices of its programme for Mutual and Co-operative Institutions.
Much of this research on credit unions can be found at the Credit Union Research
Forum. http://www.qub.ac.uk/mgt/curf/index.html
